Class information
Students will be required to obtain a standard martial arts uniform for training. It is recommended that students purchase a Judo-style uniform for Shinkendo. These uniforms are thicker and heavier than Karate uniforms and offer more protection for working with blades. A hakama (Japanese pleated, wide-leg pants made popular by the samurai) is also recommended for Shinkendo. These items can be purchased at most martial arts supply stores. For Shinkendo, students will be required to obtain a bokken/bokuto (katana-shaped wooden sword) for training. It is recommended that students not purchase the standard red oak bokken that are commonly found in most martial arts supply stores. These bokken are of low quality and are too light in weight so they will not offer sufficient training for the body. Serious students should purchase a heavier bokken which will better prepare the body for performing learned movements with a real sword. Heavier bokken are typically made of denser wood that is of much higher quality than red oak, so they will cost more but they will last much longer and enhance your training.
